Scholarships

Each year IATEFL offers a great range of conference scholarships to enable teachers, trainers and other ELT professionals the opportunity to attend the IATEFL Annual Conference in the UK.

These scholarships are offered by IATEFL, by a range of IATEFL Special Interest Groups, and by a wide range of other scholarship sponsors: institutions, companies, groups and individuals - we would like to thank each of them for their generosity.

Applications for our 58th IATEFL Conference in Edinburgh are now closed.

Winners will be announced in August 2024.

Frequently asked questions

If the answer to your question is not included below or you would like some more information, please contact IATEFL Head Office on conference@iatefl.org

When is the application deadline for a scholarship?
The application deadline for the 2025 conference scholarships is 14.00 (UK time) Wednesday 19 June 2024.  Results will be emailed to applicants between 12 and 23 August 2024.

How do I know which scholarships I am eligible for?
The ones you can apply for will show on your Scholarship Dashboard when you login.
Our Scholarship Summary Sheet is the quickest way to see all eligibility criteria.

How many scholarships can I apply for?
It is best to put in one or two carefully written scholarship applications but you are allowed to apply for any scholarship for which you meet the necessary requirements. You can only submit ONE speaker proposal so make sure your proposed talk or workshop is relevant to all the scholarships you apply for. Submitting more than one speaker proposal will invalidate your application.

Do I have to be an IATEFL member to apply for a scholarship?
Some scholarships require you to be an individual member of IATEFL and other scholarships are open to any ELT professional. The guidelines of each scholarship will give you the information.

If you would like to become a member before you begin your scholarship application please visit www.iatefl.org/get-involved/membership. Please note that it can take up to 2 working days for your membership to be activated once we receive your payment.

Do I have to give a talk or workshop to get a scholarship?
Some scholarships require a presentation and some don't. The guidelines of each scholarship will give you this information. If a presentation is required, remember you can only submit ONE speaker proposal so make sure your proposed talk or workshop is relevant to all the scholarships you apply for. Submitting more than one speaker proposal will invalidate your application.

How do I continue an application I have already started?
It is possible to begin your application, save it and return at a later date to complete it. When you want to return, head back to your Dashboard and click on the Scholarships tab.
If you started your application and the deadline has since passed, you will not be able to submit your completed application.

How often can I win a scholarship?
Once every 4 years, for example if you won a 2023 scholarship you can next apply for a scholarship for the 2027 conference. Winning more than once is unlikely.

Can I win the same scholarship more than once?
No, you can't.

When will I get the results?
The results of the applications for 2025 scholarships will be emailed to all applicants between 12 and 23 August 2024. Remember to check your emails regularly during this time as you will need to confirm your acceptance of the scholarship as soon as you receive the email. Please do not contact the IATEFL Head Office about the decisions; the Scholarship Committee will send everyone the results as soon as they are available.

Who decides who the winners are?
Each scholarship is decided by a different panel of experienced judges whose decisions are final. The Scholarship Committee is sorry but it cannot issue reasons for the results because there are so many applicants the workload would be overwhelming.

How will I receive the award if I win?
The money will be awarded to you at the Scholarship Winners' Gathering on the first day of the Conference. If your award includes a membership of IATEFL this will be activated following the conference.

Scholarship guidelines

Understanding the guidelines

Careful reading is the key.  Every year the sponsors of our scholarships set different parameters for their awards so please check the following points in the description of each scholarship before applying.

‘The scholarship consists of’ – this section tells you what you could win. Some scholarships are very generous and cover all the costs of attending a conference. Other scholarships are more modest and would help you with your costs but you would need to have some further funding of your own to be able to afford to come. Scholarship awards are as stated on the website and cannot be increased.

‘To qualify you must’ – these are the rules for a particular scholarship and if you don’t meet the requirements your application will not be considered. Examples of rules are ‘you must be a newcomer with between three and ten years’ experience in ELT’, ‘you must be a native of and normally resident in an African country’, ‘you must be an individual member of IATEFL’. Each scholarship has different requirements, so please read carefully.

‘To be considered, you must submit’ – this section lists what you must complete electronically by the application deadline. You should use the online application only, we cannot accept applications sent by any other means.
